Addiction, Families and Recovery

Drug and alcohol addiction adversely impacts the user and their family. Many times, it is up to a family member to take the initial steps necessary to get their loved one into alcohol and drug treatment.

Entering rehab is not always easy and can take determination and patience. Your loved may strongly resist any help believing they don’t have a drug or alcohol problem. In many cases, family members such as a spouse or parent can have the most influence over an addict’s decision to seek recovery. Persuading a loved one that a drug and alcohol rehab programme is the best way to break free from addiction and to begin to rebuild their lives is the first major step in the recovery journey.

Sahwan Rehab understands the important role family plays in getting a loved one into treatment.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Sahwan addiction rehab receives calls and emails daily from concerned mothers, fathers, spouses, brothers and other extended family members. We discuss with family members their loved one’s destructive addictive behaviors and the effect they are having. They want help for their loved ones but also for themselves. This is what we offer.

We understand that addiction is pervasive and destructive for all concerned. From having money and possessions stolen to bailing a loved one out of jail, visiting them in the hospital, and watching them destroy their life, family members endure much.

Learning to Rebuild Lives and Relationships

At Sahwan Rehab, we understand that relationships are often destroyed by drug and alcohol addiction..

Learning how to rebuild relationships is a fundamental part of creating a new and healthy drug and alcohol-free lifestyle. During rehab, your loved one will work through the root cause of their addiction and the things that led them to abuse alcohol and drugs. They will receive daily counselling to gain insight into their addiction and learn the steps to live an alcohol and drug free life. In addition, they will learn the skills necessary to start rebuilding relationships through:

Group Therapy

Our group therapy sessions follow the 12-step model of drug and alcohol addiction therapy. During group therapy, your loved one will meet with others suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol to explore issues in an interpersonal context. Sessions provide an outlet for individuals to express their feelings and problems and provide mutual support. Sessions are guided by our counsellors and focus on a different addiction recovery topic each day. The goal of group therapy is to create positive changes in behaviour. Group therapy is an excellent way for your loved one to learn to open up, trust others and rebuild relationships.

The 12 Steps and Forgiveness

Forgiveness starts with self. To move past drug and alcohol addiction, an addict must first forgive themselves and let go of the past. Through one-on-one counselling sessions, group counselling sessions and our learning to recover programme, your loved one will be guided through the process of forgiveness. Part of the 12-step programme is also about creating a list of people who have been harmed by your addiction to drugs and alcohol and asking for forgiveness. Our counsellors will work with your loved one to develop a list and plan for completing this step. Depending on the length of programme, this may be done from the safety and comfort of our facility or remotely via our Online Aftercare Coaching programme.

Addiction can leave relationships in turmoil. Rehab can help to rebuild broken relationships and lay the foundation for a healthy, drug and alcohol-free life. Remember that the road to recovery is a long one. Your loved one will face many challenges to staying sober. Rehab is the first step in that process.

Through the guidance, encouragement and support they receive in rehab, your loved one can overcome their addiction and embrace a new beginning.
